About The Elements Song

I stuck this commentary in a separate post as it is quite long.

The Elements song by Thomas Lehrer is a fun memory test if nothing else! Here he is performing it in 1967: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AcS3NOQnsQM In this version he says Gold twice and misses Sulfur...

Mr. Lehrer based on this song "I Am the Very Model of a Modern Major-General". Not as well known now I guess: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zSGWoXDFM64

Bonus! Here is an odd Japanese version for ya too: http://boingboing.net/2010/10/08/the-elements-tom-leh.html

The number of elements discovered expands all the time. This song lists 102, now there are 118, though not all have names yet. The named ones 103 to 112 are lawrencium, rutherfordium, dubnium, seaborgium, bohrium, hassium, meitnerium, darmstadtium, roentgenium and copernicium,

The newest only have names based on their number so 113 to 118 are ununtrium, ununquadium, ununpentium, ununhexium, ununseptium and ununoctium.

Though 114 and 116 were only this year named Flerovium (FL) and Livermorium (Lv) for the labs they were discovered in. You can see the whole table here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Periodic_table_(large_version)

Of course it was much easier to learn in Aristotle's time when there was only Air, Fire, Water and Earth. Also Chuck Norris only recognises one element: the element of surprise :-)

Christmas Time (Don't let the bells end)

This songs lyrics are hard to make out in the rocking original (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VQhuoY5h2kE) but quite poignant when you read them. It can be covered with less rock too, here is an example with just piano: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f8XPmxTsc5Q&list=FL2Az2fvu7SdV-aLys70PSXA&index=2

On the Uke, I do an into with A played by moving G up 2 frets, and then D on  the 5th fret with the A shape barred. If that makes no sense, never mind!

A                     E                                   F#min                                     D

You've got a friend in me

Not Christmassy, but Christmas is all about the kids and they may call on you to play something, and they all know this one from Toy Story.

Chords are all here: http://www.alligatorboogaloo.com/uke/tabs/070128.html
There's also a nice tutorial with even simpler chords here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UDK384r4Nvk Mike even leaves out the tricky middle eight.

This version is complete and based on these chords: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vwF68-I3qos

Xmas - Santa Baby/Buddy

Another classic, best done by Eartha Kitt, but here's a twist: a guy singing it. Michael Buble did a kind of swing version which I think is at least interesting... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eOglC5_iLJs

Xmas - Mele Kalikimaka!

This version is nice and easy to play. It is posted on Dr. Uke's site so rather than copy it, I'll just link to it. He plays it in F then in D, so it makes the short song a bit longer, enjoy!

Xmas - Baby, It's cold outside...

What did he put in her drink anyway? It was just booze. Frank Loesser used to perform it with his wife at parties, so I guess it was hardly meant to be creepy. You'll notice the "mouse" (as she is known in the original)'s only objections are what other people would think of her. The "wolf"'s arguments verge into the ridiculous "Think of my lifelong sorrow, if you got pneumonia and died". It's meant to be funny! I think they were both enjoying themselves mightily.

There are so many great versions of this (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baby,_It's_Cold_Outside) I love the Cerys Matthews and Tom Jones version. Then there's the latest with Cee Lo Green and Christina Aguilera...

Baby it's cold outside.

C  Cmaj7 C6 Cmaj7 This is just 3, 2 and 0 on the A string.

C                   Cmaj7            C6               Cmaj7
I really can't stay
                      But baby it's cold outside

Dm7                G7               Dm7        G7
I've got to go away
                       But baby it's cold outside

C                   Cmaj7                         C6             Cmaj7
The evening has been
Been hoping that you'd drop in

             Gm7             C7
So very nice
I'll hold your hands, they're just like ice

 F                                F7
My mother will start worry
                                 Beautiful what’s your hurry?

 Fm                                          Fm7
And father will be pacing the floor
                                                Listen to the fireplace roar

 C                            C7
So really i'd better scurry
                              Beautiful please don't hurry

     Dm7                                      G7
But maybe just a half a drink more
Put some records on while I pour

C                   Cmaj7            C6               Cmaj7
The neighbors might think
                                   Baby it's bad out there

Dm7                       G7               Dm7        G7
Say, what's in this drink?
No cabs to be had out there

C                   Cmaj7            C6               Cmaj7
I wish i knew how
Your eyes are like starlight now

             Gm7                      C7
To break the spell
I'll take your hat, your hair looks swell

 F                                F7
I ought to say, "No, no, no sir"
Mind if I move in closer

Dm7                                          G7
At least i'm gonna say that i tried
What's the sense in hurtin' my pride?

 C                                    A7
I really can't stay
                    Baby don't hold out

                   D7   G7  C
Ah, but it's cold outside

C                   Cmaj7            C6               Cmaj7
I simply must go
                      Baby, it's cold outside

Dm7                G7               Dm7        G7
The answer is no
                       Ooh darling, it's cold outside

C                   Cmaj7            C6               Cmaj7
This welcome has been
I'm lucky that you dropped in

So nice and warm
Look out the window at that storm

 F                                F7
My sister will be suspicious
                                      Man, your lips look delicious

My brother will be there at the door
                                                   Waves upon a tropical shore

 C                                        C7
My maiden aunt's mind is vicious
                                              Gosh your lips are delicious

         Dm7                                      G7
Well maybe just a cigarette more
                                                 Never such a blizzard before

C                   Cmaj7            C6               Cmaj7
I've got to go home
Oh, baby, you'll freeze out there

Dm7                       G7               Dm7        G7
Say, lend me a comb
It's up to your knees out there

C                   Cmaj7            C6               Cmaj7
You've really been grand
I thrill when you touch my hand

             Gm7                         C7
But don't you see
How can you do this thing to me?

 F                                F7
There's bound to be talk tomorrow
Think of my life long sorrow

 Dm7                                          G7
At least there will be plenty implied
If you caught pneumonia and died

 C                                    A7
I really can't stay
                    Get over that hold out

                   D7               Db7     C
Ah, but it's cooooooold out       side

Xmas Ukulele Songbook

OK, I have created a whole list of Christmas favourites for you. Actually, I did this for a group of my fellow ukulele people who will be busking with it to raise money for Focus Ireland before xmas.

So, here is a link to the PDF of the songbook on scribd. Cool huh?

Now, if you would like some really good karma, give a few quid to Focus Ireland. They help homeless people over here in a Emerald Isle. Who would want to be homeless at xmas? So be nice and help them out a bit. There but for the grace of... whatever you believe in. Here's the page to donate. Happy Xmas!

Xmas - I believe in Father Christmas

Dsus2                 G6      D                  (same chords for each line)
They said there'll be snow at Christmas
They said there'll be peace on earth,
But instead it just kept on raining,
A veil of tears for the Virgin birth.

Chorus:
C  G           D
I remember one Christmas morning,
C            G           D
The Winter's light and a distant choir,
         D        A             G              D
And the peal of a bell and that Christmas tree smell,
    D            G6         Dsus2
And eyes full of tinsel and fire.

Dsus2          G6        D
They sold me A dream of Christmas,
They sold me A silent night,
They told me A fairy story,
'Til I believed in the Israelite.

Chorus:
C  G           D
I remember one Christmas morning,
C            G           D
The Winter's light and a distant choir,
         D        A             G              D
And the peal of a bell and that Christmas tree smell,
    D            G6         Dsus2
And eyes full of tinsel and fire.

Dsus2        G6       D
I wish you A hopeful Christmas,
I wish you A brave New Year,
All anguish, pain and sadness,
Leave your heart and let your road be clear.

Dsus2                 G6      D
They said there'd be snow at Christmas,
They said there'd be peace on earth,
D            A           G6        D
Hallelujah! Noel!, be it Heaven or Hell,
     D           G6   Dsus2
The Christmas we get, we deserve.

H'ween - Psycho

This isn't the Hitchcock song, it was written by Leon Payne and covered by Elvis Costello, Jack Kittel, Eddie Noack and Neil Gaiman. I like them all, may prefer Eddie's.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ftOCvwrygCI (Jack)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BtDLN4LoPZA (Eddie)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r56Mqzp6d58 (Neil)

In the intro and later in the main verses, the Bm chord is altered by playing
a Bm/A (Lift your finger off the A string...)
D                 A     D
Can Mary fry some fish, mama
       Bm
I'm as hungry as can be
D              A     D
Oh lord, how I wish, mama
Bm
You could stop the baby cryin'
A                         D
'Cause my head is killing me

I saw my ex again last night mama
She was at the dance at Miller's store
She was with that Jackie White mama
I killed them both
And they're buried under Jacob's sycamore

(Hold D)                       Bm (Bm/A)
You think I'm psycho don't you mama
                            D
I didn't mean to break your cup
                               Bm
You think I'm psycho don't you mama
A                          D
You better let 'em lock me up

Oh, don't hand me Johnny's pup mama
As I might squeeze him too tight
I'm havin' crazy dreams again mama
So let me tell you 'bout last night
I woke up in Johnny's room mama
Standing right there by his bed
With my hands around his throat mama
Wishing both of us were dead

You think I'm psycho don't you mama
I just killed Johnny's pup
You think I'm psycho don't you mama
You'd better let 'em lock me up

Oh you recall that little girl mama
I believe her name was Betty Clark
Oh don't tell me that she's dead mama
'Cause I just saw her in the park
We were sitting on a bench mama
Thinking of a game to play
Seems I was holding a wrench mama
Then my mind just walked away

You think I'm psycho don't you mama
I didn't mean to break your cup
You think I'm psycho don't you mama
Mama why don't you get up?

H'ween - Creepy Doll

A nice and creepy song for ya to prepare for the season that is in it:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NVtR7azLVcI&feature=related

(Am)               (E)                   (C)
In a town in the woods at the top of a hill
                     (D)
There's a house where no one lives
(F/C)               (C)                 (D)              (E)
So you take a big bag of your big city money there, and buy it
(Am)                    (E)
Then at night when the house is dark
          (C)                 (D)
And you're all alone there's a noise upstairs
(F/C)              (C)                          (D)                    (E)
At the top of the stairs there's a door so you take a deep breath and try it
        F/C                  C                Bm7b5           Am
And the flashlight shows you something moving just inside the door
          F/C                  C                D                E
There's a tattered dress and a feeling you have felt somewhere before....

Where everybody knows your name. (Cheers Theme)

This is the whole song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MMNVNRybluQ&feature=related

Alternate G and D for first 4 lines of each verse.

Making your way in the world today
Takes everything you've got
Taking a break from all your worries
Sure would help a lot
Dm6  (4210) E7      Am  D7
Wouldn't you like to get away

All those nights when you've got no lights
The check is in the mail
And your little angel
Hung the cat up by its tail
Dm6  (4210) E7      Am  D7            C
And your third fiancée didn't show

C                                  G
Sometimes you want to go
                    F                         C       D
Where everybody knows your name
G                  F                         C       D
And they're always glad you came
Bm                                           C
You want to be where you can see
Bm                               C
Our troubles are all the same
 Bm                             C              D                G     D G D
You want to be where everybody knows your name

Roll out of bed, Mr. Coffee's dead
The morning's looking bright
And your shrink ran off to Europe
And didn't even write
And your husband wants to be a girl

Be glad there's one place in the world
Where everybody knows your name
And they're always glad you came
You want to go where people know
People are all the same
You want to go where everybody knows your name

Where everybody knows your name
And they're always glad you came

I can tell that we are going to be friends

Lovely little song by the White Stripes and covered by Jack Johnson.
As a strum, I suggest tap the uke, then chord, so TAP C TAP C TAP C etc.

C
fall is here hear the yell back to school ring the bell
F C
brand new shoes walkin blues climb the fence books and pens
G F C
i can tell that we are gonna be friends (x2)

Walk with me,Suzy Lee
through the park and by the tree
we will rest upon the ground
and look at all the bugs we found
then safely walk to school
without a sound

Well here we are,no one else
we walked to school all by ourselves
there's dirt on our uniforms
from chasing all the ants and worms
we clean up and now its time to learn

Numbers,letters,learn to spell
nouns,and books,and show and tell
at playtime we will throw the ball
back to class,through the hall
teacher marks our height
against the wall

F C
And we don't notice any time pass
F C
we don't notice anything
D
we sit side by side in every class
F
teacher thinks that I sound funny
G
but she likes the way you sing

Tonight I'll dream while in my bed
when silly thoughts go through my head
about the bugs and alphabet
and when I wake tommorow I'll bet
that you and I will walk together again
cause I can tell that we're going to be friends

Love Me Tender

Needs no introduction! But interesting to know it was adapted from a song called Aura Lee from the 1860's: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Love_Me_Tender_(song)

G            A7
Love me tender, love me sweet,
D7      G
Never let me go.
G                A7
You have made my life complete,

And I love you so.

G B7

love me true,
C Cm        G
All my dreams fulfill.
Dm        E7        A7
For, my darlin', I love you,
D7                  G
And I always will

G            A7
Love me tender, love me long,
D7      G
take me to your heart.
G                A7
For it's there that I belong,
D7        G
and we'll never part.

G B7
Love me tender,
Em         G7
love me dear,
C Cm        G
tell me you are mine.
Dm        E7        A7
I'll be yours through all the years,
D7                  G

When at last my dreams come true

Everywhere you go.

I Will Survive

I Will Survive. Is a great one for a drunken singalong, and it's the same string of chords all the way through:

Am Dm G7 Cmaj7 Fmaj7 Dm E7sus4 E7

All credit to this site where I got the chords: http://www.scorpexuke.com/songs.html

At first I was afraid I was petrified
Kept thinkin' I could never live without you by my side;
But then I spent so many nights
Thinkin' how you did me wrong
And I grew strong and I learned how to get along
And now you're back from outer space
I just walked in to find you here with that sad look upon your face
I should have changed that stupid lock
I should have made you leave your key
If I'd've known for just one second you'd back to bother me

Go on now, go walk out the door
Just turn around now
('cause) you're not welcome anymore
Weren't you the one who tried to hurt me with goodbye
Do you think I'd crumble
Did you think I'd lay down and die?
Oh no, not I. I will survive
Oh as long as I know how to love I know I'll stay alive;
I've got all my life to live,
I've got all my love to give and I'll survive,
I will survive. Hey hey.

It took all the strength I had not to fall apart
Kept trying' hard to mend the pieces of my broken heart,
And I spent oh so many nights
Just feeling sorry for myself. I used to cry
But now I hold my head up high
And you see me somebody new
I'm not that chained up little girl who's still in love with you,
And so you felt like droppin' in
And just expect me to be free,
Now I'm savin' all my lovin' for someone who's lovin' me
Go on now...

Angelina

You can get the strum here. It sounds like "Angelina".

Good calypso strum lesson here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D49goLVPAVs

Original song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i5wxNUpmMF0 (yes, the steel drum is a bit out of tune at the start!)

Harry Belafonte - Angelina

   (capo 1st fret)

Intro - D – G – A – D  = 4x's

(chorus)
  D          G     A                          D
Angelina, Angelina,  please bring down your concertina
                       G              A         A7        D
And play a welcome for me 'cause I'll be coming home from sea

(verse 1)
             D          G        D
Yes it's so long since I've been home
             D          G        A
Seems like there's no place to roam
           D       G         D
Well I've sailed around the Horn
                               G
I've been from San Jose up to Baffin Bay
          D        A      D
And I've rode out many a storm

(chorus)

(verse 2)
Well I've heard the bawdy tunes
I've been in honkytonk saloons
I took my liquor by the vat
Well I stayed on call for a rousing brawl
Home was where I hung my hat

(chorus)

(verse 3)
Now I've courted many a girl
I've been in ports all around the world
But my rambling days are done
I've been from Curacao up to Tokyo
And I've found there's only one

[Dm]Theres a new game
We like to [G]play you [F]see
[Dm]A game with added re[G]ali[A]ty
You [Dm]treat me like a dog
Get me [G]down on my [Bb]knees

[Dm]We call it [G]master and [F]servant

It’s [Dm]lot like life
This [G]play between the [F]sheets
With [Dm]you on top and [G]me under[A]neath
[Dm]Forget all about equ[G]ali[Bb] ty

[Dm]We call it [G]master and [F]servant
[Dm]We call it [G]master and [f]servant

[Gm]Its a lot like life
And([C])thats whats ([Bb])appealing
If[Gm]you despise that ([C])throwaway ([Bb])feeling
From [Gm]disposable fun
Then [A]this is the one [A][G][F][E][Dm]

Dominations the name of the game
In bed or in life
Theyre both just the same
Except in one youre fulfilled
At the end of the day

Lets play master and servant
Lets play master and servant

Lets play master and servant
Come on, master and servant
