What are you doing new years eve?

This is the most recently well known version of this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aSq1cez_flQ with Zooey Deschanel and Joseph Gordon-Levitt.

Though I like Ella Fitzgerald's version: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FIcuK7wW8bU It includes the the intro verse I've written out here.

Finally, there's Diana Krall's version: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kU_BBNeumLI which also is nice and jazzy and has the intro verse. Happy New Year everyone.

Halloween: Sally's Song from a Nightmare Before Christmas

A modern Halloween classic I think from A Nightmare Before ChristmasHelena Bonham Carter's version is good, but here's the original: Sally was voiced by Catherine O'Hara who was also in Beetlejuice among others.

Am/C = 2003

                Em       Am      F
I sense there's something in the wind
                B7           Em
That feels like tragedy's at hand
    D           G                F
And though I'd like to stand by him
      B7 Em
Can't shake this feeling that I have

The worst is just around the bend.

F    Em   B7
And does he notice
   Am/C      F
My feelings for   him
   Em        B7     Am/C
And will he see    How  much he means to me
   B7         Em
I think it's not to be.
             Em     Am       F
What will become of my dear friend?
                B7           Em
Where will his actions lead us then?
    D           G                F
And though I'd like to join the crowd
   B7 Em
In their enthusiastic cloud

Try as I may it doesn't last

And will we ever
Am/C      F
End up together

Lou Reed 1942-12013: Sweet Jane

D            A           G       Bm A      D        A          G       Bm A (Repeat)
Standing on the corner,             suitcase in my hand
Jack is in his coat, and Jane is her vest, and me
I'm in a rock'n'roll band  Hah!
Ridin' in a Stutz-Bearcat, Jim
Y'know, those were different times!
Oh, all the poets they studied rules of verse
And the ladies, they rolled their eyes
Sweet Jane!  Whoa!  Sweet Jane, oh-oh-a!  Sweet Jane!

I'll tell you something
Jack, he is a banker
And Jane, she is a clerk
Both of them save their monies, ha
And when, when they come home from work
Sittin' down by the fire, oh!
The radio does play
The classical music there, Jim
"The March of the Wooden Soldiers"
All you protest kids
You can hear Jack say, get ready, ah
Sweet Jane!  Come on baby! Sweet Jane! Oh-oh-a!  Sweet Jane!

Some people, they like to go out dancing
And other peoples, they have to work, Just watch me now!
And there's even some evil mothers
Well they're gonna tell you that everything is just dirt
Y'know that, women, never really faint
And that villains always blink their eyes, woo!
And that, y'know, children are the only ones who blush!
And that, life is just to die!
And, everyone who ever had a heart
They wouldn't turn around and break it
And anyone who ever played a part
Oh wouldn't turn around and hate it!

Sweet Jane!  Whoa-oh-oh!  Sweet Jane! Sweet Jane!
 D            G         D

Sweet Jane  Sweet Jane (repeat and fade)

[D]I saw a were [C]wolf with a Chinese [G]menu in his hand,
[D] Walking through the [C]streets of Soho in the [G]rain.
[D]He was [C]looking for the place called [G] Lee Ho Fook's,
Going to get a big dish of beef chow mein.

[D]Ahh [C]wooooo... [G]Werewolves of London,
[D]Ahh [C]wooooo! [G]
[D]Ahh[C]wooooo... [G]Werewolves of London,
[D]Ahh [C]wooooo! [G]

You hear him howling around your kitchen door,
You better not let him in.
Little old lady got mutilated late last night,
Werewolves of London again.

Ahhwooooo... Werewolves of London,
Ahwooooo!
Ahhwooooo... Werewolves of London,
Ahwooooo! Huh!

He's the hairy handed gent who ran amok in Kent,
Lately he's been overheard in Mayfair.
You better stay away from him, He'll rip your lungs out, Jim,
Huh! I'd like to meet his tailor.
Ahhwooooo... Werewolves of London,
Ahwooooo!
Ahhwooooo... Werewolves of London,
Ahwooooo!

Well, I saw Lon Chaney walking with the Queen,
Doing the Werewolves of London.
I saw Lon Chaney, Jr. walking with the Queen,
Doing the Werewolves of London.

I saw a werewolf drinking a pina colada at Trader Vic's,
And his hair was perfect.
Ahhwooooo... Werewolves of London,
Huh! Draw blood!
Ahhwooooo... Werewolves of London...

What does the fox say?

Sigh, I guess this is the new Gangnam Style. The ukulele chords for What Does The Fox Say? Are actually quite simple. They are C#m, B and F#. OK, not so simple. You could play it in Am instead, then it would be: Am G D.

To transpose the whole song, use this site: http://www.transposechords.com/song_transposed

C#m              B                  F#
Dog goes woof, cat goes meow,

Ain't we got fun?

Definitely the song of the jazz age, the roaring 20's and now our 10's and 20's too I think. It's referenced in The Great Gatsby and George Orwell wrote about it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ain't_We_Got_Fun%3F

More recently, it was in the Ps3 game Bioshock Infinite. Yes, we talk about songs being used in games now. Mad huh? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gaKZKy9SJ1o

This is just my version, You cal get all the right chords on Musicnotes for about $1.95 too.

Barbie Train

C G Am F Full chords on chordie.com or ukuleletabs.com

Just a small town girl, Living in a lonely world.
She took the midnight train going anywhere
My life is brilliant, my love is pure. I saw an angel, of this I'm sure.

I'm your biggest fan I follow you until you love me, papa-paparazzi
If I could, then I would. I'll go wherever you will go.
Forever young, I want to be Forever young
I can't live, with or without you.
She will be loved, she will be loved

MGMT Kids intro on Kazoo

I won't hesitate no more, no more, it cannot wait I'm yours.
Your lipstick stains, on the front lobe of my left side brains.
No woman no cry,
I come from a land down under
Country roads, take me home, to the place I belong,

And can you feel the love tonight?
I need some love like like I never needed love before, wanna make love to ya baby,
Take on me, take me on , I'll be gone in a day or two

When I find myself in times of trouble, mother Mary comes to me
Sometimes I feel like I don't have a partner.
I'm starting with the man in the mirror.

Whenever I fall, at your feet.
Nothing's right I'm torn. I'm all out of faith.
This is how I feel. I'm cold and I am shamed.
Lying naked on the floor.
Why'd you have to go and make things so complicated
It's too late to apologize, it's too late
Are you just going to stand there and watch me burn,
it's alright because I love the way it hurts
It's my life, it's now or never, I ain't gonna live forever
Can't read my, can't read my, no he can't read my poker face
Should auld acquaintance be forgot and never brought to mind?
Should auld acquaintance be forgot for the sake of old ang zine
(come on barbie) let's go party

The Muppet Show Theme

I've made a few goes at this and I think this one is pretty good. The key bit was the G#7, just play that like G7 slid up one fret. The rest is kinda made up, but works I think... F/C is just 2013, in other words F and C together, or you could play Dm7.

Are You Lonesome tonight?

Today in 1977 the world awoke to the news that The King had died. It was a Wednesday and I remember seeing it in the newspaper and since I was only 6 didn't really know who Elvis was, but felt the impact enough to still remember it now that I am 42, the age he died.

So, how about a nice song he did, from 1927 Are you lonesome tonight? This was an oldie even when the King recorded in in 1960. The Carter Family (as in, daughter June Carter, married Johnny Cash) recorded a version in 1936. Different melody!

This is my favourite version. Elvis generally took the piss when he played this live :-)
C 2323 Dm 0101 G7

    C Em               Am
Are you lonesome tonight, do you miss me tonight?
    C   A7           Dm  A7 Dm
Are you sorry we drifted apart?
   G7                       F
Does your memory stray to a brighter sunny day
    Dm G7 C
When I kissed you and called you sweetheart?
             C7                                                   F
Do the chairs in your parlor seem empty and bare?
 Cm        D7                              Dm     0101  G7
Do you gaze at your doorstep and picture me there?
            C       Em              C7     D7    Db7  D7
Is your heart filled with pain, shall I come back again?
            Dm                  G7                C    2323 G7
Tell me dear are you lonesome tonight.

(Talking verses, play the same chords)

I wonder if  you are lonesome tonight
You know someone said that the world is a stage
And you must play a part.
Fate had me playing in love with you as my sweet heart
Act one was when I met you, I loved you at first glance
You read your line so cleverly and never missed a cue
Then came act 2, you seemed to change and you acted strange
And why I'll never know.
Honey, you were lying when you said you loved me
And I had no cause to doubt you.
But I'd rather go on hearing your lies
Than go on living without you.
Now the stage is bare and I'm standing there
With emptiness all around
And if you won't come back to me
Then make them bring the curtain down.

    (sing again)
   C                           Em                                D
Is your heart filled with pain, shall I come back again?
              Dm                   G7          C    G7
Tell me dear are you lonesome tonight.

Autumn Leaves

It's almost August, so here's an autumn song to start practicing.
This isn't the Ed Sheeran version or Paolo Nutini.  It is the jazz standard with 2 lovely chord progressions that are quite easy when you get the hang of them.
Here's Edith Paif's version and here's one with Glen Rose showing how to play it. Buy his jazz book to say thanks :-)

This version is easy to follow when learning it.

                   3333 2333             3555        3335
The falling leaves drift by the window
                   2333  2323           0211
The autumn leaves of red and gold
                   3333 2333             3555 3335
I see your lips, the summer kisses
                         2333  2323         0211
The sun-burned hands I used to hold

                         2333  2323                0211
Since you went away the days grow long
                    3333 2333             3555
And soon I'll hear old winter's song
                   2333  2323           0211
But I miss you most of all my darling
                   2333  2323           0211
When autumn leaves start to fall

                3333 2333             3555        3335
C'est une chanson, qui nous ressemble
              2333  2323           0211
Toi tu m'aimais et je t'aimais
                3333 2333             3555        3335
Nous vivions tous, les deux ensemble
              2333  2323           0211
Toi que m'aimais moi qui t'aimais

                         2333  2323                0211
Mais la vie sépare ceux qui s'aiment
                    3333 2333             3555
Tout doucement sans faire de bruit
                   2333  2323           0211
Et la mer efface sur le sable
                   2333  2323           0211
les pas des amants désunis

                         2333  2323                0211
Since you went away the days grow long
                    3333 2333             3555
And soon I'll hear old winter's song
                   2333  2323           0211
But I miss you most of all my darling
                   2333  2323           0211
When autumn leaves start to fall

Java Jive

Java Jive is a fun song to play on the uke, though lots of chord changes. Ukulele Boogaloo has the chords here though I'd suggest a few improvements:

Play Em7 as 0202. Easier to slide up and down from A7
Gm7 is 0211
Gdim and Edim are the same here (0101) but you could play 6767 for Gdim and 3434 for Edim for a bit of variety. Edim as 0101 is easier to slide up to Em7 0202.
Cdim is 2323.
D9 is 2423 and Bm7 is  the same as D6 (2222) but can also be played 4220 if you like.

Enjoy!

Baby On Board

This one has a lovely vintage feel and was in the Simpsons episode where four of the characters form a barber shop quartet. The song was actually written and sung (well mixed in) by a real barber shop quartet called The Dapper Dans who you may have seen if you've ever been to Disneyland in California, USA.

Ukulele Boogaloo has the chords here: http://www.alligatorboogaloo.com/uke/tabs/050305.html

A ukulele player joke

Three ukulele players and three singers are traveling by train to a ukulele festival. At the station, the three ukulele players each buy tickets and watch as the three singers buy only a single ticket.
"How are three people going to travel on only one ticket?" asks a ukulele player.
"Watch and you'll see," answers a singer.
They all board the train. The ukulele players take their respective seats but all three singers cram into a restroom and close the door behind them. Shortly after the train has departed, the conductor comes around collecting tickets. He knocks on the restroom door and says, "Ticket, please." The door opens just a crack and a single arm emerges with a ticket in hand. The conductor takes it and moves on.
The ukulele players see this and agree that it is quite a clever idea so, after the festival, they decide to copy the singers on the return trip and save some money.
When they get to the station, they buy a single ticket for the return trip. To their astonishment, the singers don't buy a ticket at all.
"How are you going to travel without a ticket?" says one perplexed ukulele player.
"Watch and you'll see," answers a singer.
When they board the train the three ukulele players cram into a restroom and the three singers cram into another one nearby.
The train departs.
Shortly afterward, one of the singers leaves his restroom and walks over to the restroom where the ukulele players are hiding. He knocks on the door and says, "Ticket, please."

Whispering Grass

A sad song made funny here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=10dmK7O-KSY
These guys were in a British comedy show form the 1970's called It Ain't Half Hot Mum set in India and Burma.

A nice one to play, simple but sounds difficult. Has a sinister David Lynch feel about it too, like Blue Velvet? I think he's planning on murdering that rat in the green grass.

What[F]ever I said, what[Gm7]ever I did I didn't [Bb]mean it I just [C] want you back for

[F] Unaware [Gm7] but underlined [Bb] [C] I figured out this sto[F]ry (no no) [Gm7] It wasn't
good
[Bb] (no no) [C] But in the [F] corner of my mind [Gm7] (corner of my [Bb] mind) [C] I
celebrated  glo[F]ry [Gm7] but that [Bb]was not to be [F] [C]
in the [F] twist of separa[Gm7]tion you exce[Bb]lled at being free [C] can't you [Dm7] find a little [F] room inside for [Bb] me? [F] [C]
What[F]ever I said, what[Gm7]ever I did I didn't [Bb]mean it I just [C] want you back for
[F]good (Want you back,[Gm7] want you back, [Bb] want you back for [C] good)
When[F]ever I'm wrong just [Gm7] tell me the song and I'll [Bb] sing it you'll be [C] right and
under[F]stood (Want you back, [Gm7] want you back) I [Bb] want you back for good [C]

[Bb] And we'll be together, [F] [Bb] this time is forever [F]
[Bb] We'll be fighting and forever [F] we will be so com[Dm]plete in our love [F] we will
[Bb] never be uncovered again [C]

What[F]ever I said, what[Gm7]ever I did I didn't [Bb]mean it I just [C] want you back for
[F]good (Want you back,[Gm7] want you back, [Bb] want you back for [C] good)
When[F]ever I'm wrong just [Gm7] tell me the song and I'll [Bb] sing it you'll be [C] right and

What[F]ever I said, what[Gm7]ever I did I didn't [Bb]mean it I just [C] want you back for

[F] [Gm7] [Bb] [F] [C]
[F] I guess [Gm7] now it’s time [B] that [F] you came [C] back for [F] good

Tom Traubert's Blues

This version on uke is a good guide, though I'd keep up the slow picking (in 4/4 time) and not the strum. It is a long song too, so leaving out a verse or too might be wise.

F Gm7 F Bb
F G7 C7 (end with note C on A string)

Bb                      F                                   Gm7          C7         F C7 F
Wasted and wounded, it ain't what the moon did, I've got what I paid for now

See you tomorrow, hey Frank, can I borrow a couple of bucks from you
  F Gm7 F Bb
To go waltzing Matilda, waltzing Matilda,
  F                   Gm7      C7
You'll go waltzing Matilda with me

I'm an innocent victim of a blinded alley
And I'm tired of all these soldiers here
No one speaks English, and everything's broken, and my Stacys are soaking wet
To go waltzing Matilda, waltzing Matilda,
You'll go waltzing Matilda with me

Now the dogs are barking and the taxi cab's parking
A lot they can do for me
I begged you to stab me, you tore my shirt open,
And I'm down on my knees tonight
 Bb                            F
Old Bushmill's I staggered, you'd bury the dagger
G9 2212                                C7
In your silhouette window light go
To go waltzing Matilda, waltzing Matilda,
You'll go waltzing Matilda with me

Now I lost my Saint Christopher now that I've kissed her
And the one-armed bandit knows
And the maverick Chinamen, and the cold-blooded signs,
And the girls down by the strip-tease shows, go
Waltzing Matilda, waltzing Matilda,
You'll go waltzing Matilda with me

No, I don't want your sympathy, the fugitives say
That the streets aren't for dreaming now
And manslaughter dragnets and the ghosts that sell memories,
They want a piece of the action anyhow
Go waltzing Matilda, waltzing Matilda,
You'll go waltzing Matilda with me

And you can ask any sailor, and the keys from the jailor,
And the old men in wheelchairs know
And Matilda's the defendant, she killed about a hundred,
And she follows wherever you may go
Waltzing Matilda, waltzing Matilda,
You'll go waltzing Matilda with me

And it's a battered old suitcase to a hotel someplace,
And a wound that will never heal
No prima donna, the perfume is on an

Old shirt that is stained with blood and whiskey

Inchworm

A deceptively simple little song by Frank Loesser that he wrote along with Thumbelina and Wonderful Copenhagen for the movie Hans Christian Andersen starring Danny Kaye in 1952. Paul McCartney covered it for his recent album Kisses On The Bottom

Other songs he wrote? What Are You Doing New Years Eve?,  On a Slow Boat to China and the xmas favourite: Baby, It's Cold Outside (he won an Oscar for that).

Bein' Green

A classic! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z4ZxxHbJGbY (Kermit)
Even Van Morrison covered it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m3L9P4RlrjQ

Gmaj7 0222
It's not easy bein' green
F#7 3421
Having to spend each day
Dm6 4210
The color of the leaves
E7
When I think it could be nicer
Am7
Bein' red or yellow or gold
D7                                                       G  D7
Or something much more colorful like that

Gmaj7
It's not easy bein' green
F#7
It seems you blend in
Dm6
With so many other ordinary things
E7
And people tend to pass you over
Am7
'Cause you're not standing out
D7
Like flashy sparkles on the water
                        G D7
Or stars in the sky

Fmaj7 2413
But green's the color of spring
Bbmaj7 3210
And green can be cool and friendly like
Em7
And green can be big like an ocean
A7                                              Am7              D7
Or important like a mountain or tall like a tree

Gmaj7
When green is all there is to be
F#7                      Dm6
It could make you wonder why
E7
But, why wonder, why wonder?
Am7
I'm green and it'll do fine
D7                                                           G
It's beautiful and I think it's what I want to be

Fire and Rain - James Taylor

Susanne was a friend who'd committed suicide. There's a lot of pain in this one though written when Taylor was only 22. I mean, what's Taylor Swift got to complain about compared to that!

Sweet dreams and flying machines in pieces on the ground

Get Lucky for ukulele. Get L-uke-y?

Chords are Bm (4222), D (2220), F#m (2120) and E (4442), I guess easier would be Am, C, Em (0402) and D.

I like this uke version, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O3KqxY0xzhc though I don't try and sing the hook in that octave!

I also slide the Bm up from Bbm to give it a funky feel.

Strum is just a feeling rather than anything easy to pin down, just feel the funk y'all!

                                  Bm        D
Like the legend of the phoenix
F#m          E       (repeat all through the song)
All ends with beginnings
What keeps the planet spinning
The force from the beginning

[Hook]
We've come too far
To give up who we are
So let's raise the bar
And our cups to the stars
She's up all night 'til the sun
I'm up all night to get some
She's up all night for good fun
I'm up all night to get lucky
We're up all night 'til the sun
We're up all night to get some
We're up all night for good fun
We're up all night to get lucky (x5)

The present has no ribbon
Your gift keeps on giving
What is this I'm feeling?
If you want to leave, I'm wit' it

[Hook]

[Bridge: Daft Punk]
We’re up all night to get (x4)
We’re up all night to get back together
We’re up all night (let’s get back together!)
We’re up all night to get funky
We’re up all night to get lucky
We’re up all night to get lucky (x8)

[Hook]

[Outro x4]
We're up all night to get lucky

Wayfaring Stranger

I love the versions by Ed Sheeran, Dolly Parton,  Emmylou Harris and Johnny Cash.
Though the off-tune versions by Bill Monroe (few more versions in this playlist) and Jack White have a strange beauty too.

I am a (Am) poor way- (E7) faring (Am) stranger
While travelling (Dm) through this world of (E7) woe
There's no (Am) sick- (E7) ness no toil or (Am) danger
In that bright (Dm) wo- (E7) rld to which I (Am) go
I'm going (F) there (G) to meet my (C) father
I'm going (F) there (G) no more to (C) ro- (E7) am
I’m only (Am) go- (E7) ing over (Am) Jordan
I’m only (Dm) go- (E7) ing over (Am) home (E7)

I know dark (Am) clouds will (E7) gather a- (Am) round me
I know my (Dm) path is rough and (E7) steep
But golden (Am) fields lie (E7) there be- (Am) fore me
Where weary (Dm) eyes no (E7) more shall (Am) weep
I'm going (F) there (G) to see my (C) mother
She said she'd (F) meet me (G) when I (C) come (E7)
I’m only (Am) go- (E7) ing over (Am) Jordan
I’m only (Dm) go- (E7) ing over (Am) home (E7)

I'll soon be (Am) free from (E7) every (Am) trial
This form will (Dm) rest beneath the (E7) sod
I'll drop the (Am) cross of (E7) self de- (Am) nial,
And enter (Dm) in my (E7) home with (Am) God.
I'm going (F) there to (G) see my (C) Saviour
Who shed for (F) me His (G) precious (C) blood (E7)
I’m only (Am) go- (E7) ing over (Am) Jordan
I’m only (Dm) go- (E7) ing over (Am) home (E7)

I'm going to (Am) wear the (E7) crown of (Am) glory
When I get (Dm) home to that bright (E7) land
I'm going to (Am) shout salvation's (Am) story
In concert (Dm) with that (E7) bloodwashed (Am) band
I'm going (F) there (G) to meet my (C) Saviour
To sing His (F) praises (G) for ever (C) more (E7)
I’m only (Am) go- (E7) ing over (Am) Jordan
I’m only (Dm) go- (E7) ing over (Am) home (E7)

Hula Girl

A fun little song, and not too hard, I think. This one is in the key of F, like mine below.
There's a few versions in G as well. That one has the chords in G in the description.
Love this one with Robert Crumb & The Cheap Suit Serenaders.

F D7 G7 C7 F

F                          G7
All the time, In the tropical clime, where they do the hula hula dance
C7     F                    Bb                F
I fell in love, With a chocolate dove while learning that funny funny dance
        F  G7
This poor little kid, Why, she never did a bit of loving before
       G7                                    F        G7             C7    F
So I made up my mind, That I struck a find,  she's the only girl I'd dare adore

[CHORUS]

C7                                                    F
I love a pretty little Honolulu, hula hula girl (she's the candy kid to wriggle)
C7
Hula girl, (she will surely make you giggle)
F
Hula girl, (with her naughty little wiggle)
C7 F
Some day, I'm goin' to try to make this hula hula girlie mine, this girlie mine
             D7           G7        F             C7     F
'Cause all the while I'm dreaming of her my Honolulu hula girl

C7 F C7 F C7 F D7 G7  F C7 F

F         G7
Out at the beach, with your dear little peach where the waves are rolling in so high
C7         F                      Bb                       F
Holding her hand, while you sit on the sand, promise you'll win her heart or die
F G7
You start in to tease, you give her a squeeze her heart is all in a whirl
G7       F                             G7                    C7    F
If you get in a pinch, go to, it's a cinch! When spooning with a hula girl
