So Long, Leonard

With the passing of the great Leonard Cohen. I wanted to mark it here. So Long Marianne was just one of his many songs, but since he kept tweaking it, I have just heard some new verses. Which is like finding some chocolate after you thought it was all gone. Now that he is gone, all we will have is scraps and fragments. So here are the new (to me) opening lines.

Here comes the morning boat,
Here comes the evening train,
Here comes Marianne now,
To wave goodbye again.

He performed them in 1988 and 1993 when in Oslo so it is likely Marianne was in the audience.

More on variations of the song.

F                                   C
I see you've gone and changed your name again
A#                              F
And just when I climbed this whole mountainside
    Am                     G  Gsus4 G G7
to wash my eyelids in the rain

[Chorus]

   C                    Dm
Oh, your eyes, well, I forget your eyes
F                              C
your body's at home in every sea
A#                             F
How come you gave away your news to everyone
Am                              G Gsus4 G G7
that you said was a secret to me

Oh, I do like to be beside the seaside

I moved to the UK and to beside the silvery sea in the last year. So I found myself singing this in my head a lot, so I found the chords and the verses too, since most of us only know the chorus. It was a big hit in about 1909: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KyFniXdqsQQ

D  Dm6 (2222)
Everyone delights to spend their summer's holiday
A7 D
Down beside the side of the silvery sea
D
I'm no exception to the rule
Dm6
In fact, if I'd me way
A7       D
I'd reside by the side of the silvery sea.

A  A7
But when you're just the common or garden
D
Smith or Jones or Brown
A7
At bus'ness up in town
D
You've got to settle down.
A
You save your money all the year till
D Dm6
summer comes around
A
Then away you go
A7
To a spot you know
E7 A7
Where the cockle shells are found.

[CHORUS]

2110   D A
Oh! I do like to be beside the seaside
Dm6 G B7
I do like to be beside the sea!
  A  A7 B7 2320  2330
I do like to stroll upon the Prom, Prom, Prom!
E7
Where the brass bands play:
A7
"Tiddely-om-pom-pom!"
D A
So just let me be beside the seaside
Dm6 G  B7
I'll be beside myself with glee
            Em Db7
And there's lots of girls besides,
2424 B7
I should like to be beside
E7 A7
Beside the seaside!
D
Beside the sea!  A7 D  2110

D  Dm6 (2222)
Timothy went to Blackpool for the day last Eastertide
A7 D
To see what he could see by the side of the sea
D  Dm6 (2222)
Soon he reached the station there, the first thing he espied
A7       D
Was the Wine Lodge door, stood open invitingly
A  A7
To quench his thirst, he toddled inside,
D
and called out for a ‘wine'
A
Which grew to eight or nine
D Dm6
Till his nose began to shine
A
Said he “What people see in the sea
D
I'm sure I fail to see”
A
So he caught the train
A7
back home again
E7  A7
Then to his wife said he.

[CHORUS]

D
William Sykes the burglar,
Dm6
He'd been out to work one night
A7 D
Filled his bag with jewels, cash, and plate.
D  Dm6 (2222)
Constable Brown felt quite surprised when William hove in sight
A7       D
Said he: "The hours you're keeping are far too late."
A  A7
So he grabbed him by the collar and lodged him
D
safe and sound in jail
A
Next morning looking pale
D
Bill told a tearful tale.
A
The judge said, "For a couple of months
D
I'm sending you away!"
A
Said Bill: "How kind!
A7
Well! If you don't mind
E7 A7
Where I spend my holiday!"

[CHORUS]

Moondance

Flip! Not updated the blog in a while, here's an easy one for ya!

Am7 Bm7  C   E7+ = 1203 not 1202

Play Am7 and Bm7, or just 0000 and 2222 all the way through verses.

well it's a marvellous night for a moondance with the
stars up a-bove in your eyes
a fan-tabulous night to make romance 'neath the
color of october skies
all the leaves on the trees are falling to the
sounds of the breezes that blow
and I'm trying to please to the calling of the
heartstrings that play soft and low

              Dm7    Am7
you know the night's magic seems to
Dm7 Am7
whisper and hush  and all the
Dm7   Am7 Dm7
soft moonlight seems to shine
E7
on your blush

Am7 Bm7 C
can I just have one more moondance with you my love
can I just make some more romance with you my love

E7

Instrumental verse and chorus

Well, I wanna make love to you tonight
I can't wait 'til the morning has come
And I know that the time is just right
And straight into my arms you will run
And when you come my heart will be waiting
To make sure that you're never alone
There and then all my dreams will come true, dear
There and then I will make you my own

               Dm7 Dm7    Am7
and every time          I touch you

         Dm7 Dm7             Am7
you just          tremble in-side

           Dm7 Dm7      Am7
and I know          how much you want me

     Dm7 Dm7 Dm7              E7 E7 E7    1005
that             I cant hide

    Am7    Bm7      Am7       Bm7
can I just have one more moon-dance with

Am7    Bm7       Am7     Bm7
you           my love

    Am7    Bm7       Am7     Bm7
can I just make some more ro-mance with

Am7    Bm7       Am7   E7
you           my love

One more Moondance with you in the moonlight
On a magic night
La, la, la, la in the moonlight
On a magic night
Am7           G7      F7        Em         Dm7      Am7
Can't I just have one more moon dance with you my love
